The Foundation Under Every Medicare Choice
Every other Medicare choice is built on top of Parts A and B, so it pays to know them well. They are run by the federal government, accepted by most doctors and hospitals nationwide, and the starting point for anyone turning 65.
Knowing their limits matters just as much. Original Medicare leaves gaps that surprise many new members, and the way you fill those gaps shapes your costs for years.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Part A in a Nutshell
Part A handles inpatient stays, short-term rehab after at least three inpatient days, hospice and some home health services. There is usually no monthly charge for it, provided you or your spouse put in roughly ten working years of Medicare payroll tax.
Costs come in when you use it. This year, you owe $1,736 when a benefit period starts, and very long stays add daily coinsurance. A period wraps up after you have gone two full months, 60 days, without any hospital or rehab-facility stay.
Part B in a Nutshell
Part B covers office visits, outpatient surgery, lab tests, imaging, durable medical equipment such as walkers, and many preventive services, including a yearly wellness visit at no charge.
Most people see the standard $202.90 monthly premium for 2026 taken straight out of their benefit check. Higher earners pay more. After a $283 deductible for the year, you generally owe 20 percent of the approved amount.
What Original Medicare Does Not Cover
- Most prescription drugs you take at home
- Routine dental work, eye exams for glasses and hearing aids
- Help with daily living in a long-term care home
- Care outside the United States, with rare exceptions
Most enrollees fill those holes in one of two ways. A Medigap policy plus a drug plan is one route; a Part C plan is the other.
Assignment and Your Doctor's Bill
Doctors who take assignment accept Medicare's set fee as payment in full. Those who decline assignment may add as much as 15 percent on top. Asking the office this question before a procedure can save real money.
